A tetradentate ligand, L, derived from a bowl-shaped calixresorcinarene by incorporation of four phosphonite donors, has been used in the synthesis of several tetragold(I) and tetracopper(I) complexes, such as [L(AuCl)4] and [pyH]+[LCu4(μ-Cl)4(μ3-Cl)] -; the halide inclusion found for the copper complexes is unique in calixarene chemistry.
