Abstract

Application considerations and the nature of the connected load are a main input in the design of electrical machines for demanding applications. These factors were utilized in the design of a dual voltage exterior rotor permanent magnet (PM) actuator. The different phases of the actuator improvement were concluded with the design of a dual winding PM actuator. The physical coupling between the two sets of windings was used to satisfy the application requirements. Analytical and finite element (FE) analysis of the actuator and its various improvements will be presented in this work. A dynamic model of the dual winding exterior rotor PM actuator will also be developed. The advantage of utilizing the coupling between the sets of windings will then build upon the understanding of the dynamic model. Experimental results corroborating the presented theory will demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented theory. © 2007 IEEE.
