Abstract

River Ganga water was studied during different seasons from Narora to Kannauj, a total stretch of about 236 km with an objective to determine it's quality based on bacteriological examination from public health point of view and to evaluate it's use for daily needs. Correlation analysis between D.O. and T.B.C., T.C., F.C. and F.S. (bacteriological parameters) as well as between T.C. and F.S., between F.C. and F.S. and between F.C. and T.C. showed perfect linear relationship. Water quality in terms of total Coliform count is 'C' for Fatehgarh and 'D' for all other stations. In this study, fecal streptococci (F.S.) appears to be more appropriate indicator of pollution and the water seems to be unfit for drinking purpose at Narora, Katchla and Kannauj. Suggestions to check the pollution are also discussed.
