Abstract
A wet chemistry route to produce barium zirconate BaZrxY 1-xO3-δ (BZY) and barium cerium zirconate BaCe 1-x-zZrxYzO3-δ (BCZY) with controlled chemical structure and microstructural properties was optimized. A single phase was obtained at temperatures as low as 1100°C for BZY and 1200°C for BCZY. To verify their chemical stability, all the calcined oxides were exposed to CO2 and the phase composition of the resulting specimens was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis Dense electrolytes were obtained sintering BZY and BCZY pellets at 1600°C for 10 hours, as shown from field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images. To compare the cell performance of the different oxides, fuel cell polarization curves on symmetric (Pt/BZY/Pt and Pt/BCZY/Pt) cells were measured at 700°C
