Abstract

Cr-doped silica nanospheres (NS) have been synthesized on Si substrates at 700 °C with a chlorine-assisted vapor transport method. CrCl2 powder not only serves as the source for Cr doping, but also generates chlorine gas, which reacts with the Si substrates and lowers the growth temperature. The diameter and oxygen concentration of the silica NS can be tuned by the oxygen content in the carrying gas, which also affects the position and intensity of the blue and red emission bands in the photoluminescence spectra. This chlorineassisted synthesis and the associated versatile controls on size, doping, oxygen deficiency, and optical properties of the silica NS may help to advance potential NS-based technologies.
