Abstract
An experimental study of the combustion of lean propane/air stratified mixtures in a constant volume chamber was conducted. A planar injector was developed to study the propagation of a flame in a two-dimensional stratified flow. The study was performed in a parallelepipedic chamber. The gaseous fuel is injected in the chamber previously filled with air under 1 bar and 293 K. Mixtures of equivalence ratios of 0.71:1 and 0.94:1, which corresponded to a sonic injection of propane, were used. To obtain a minimum duration between ignition (τ) and 10% of pressure increase, the optimum values of τ were 10-15 msec. For τ < 10 msec, flow velocity at the ignition point was too high to obtain autonomous combustion, flame was extinguished even if initiation could be observed by high speed visualization.
