Abstract
Ultra violet photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study valence band structure of emeraldine base (EB). Following heat treatment in UHV, necessary to remove both traces of solvent as well as hydrocarbon contamination, details of the valence band spectrum emerge. The resultant spectrum is in perfect agreement with the convoluted density-of-valence-states obtained from the results of VEH-level quantum chemical calculations. Because of the photoionization cross sections for ultra violet light, the combined experimental and theoretical results provide the highest quality electronic structure determination of emeraldine base in the region of the valence band edge.
