Diagnostics in reacting flows using transient grating spectroscopy

Abstract

We review the work done to date in examining laser induced transient gratings as a single-point diagnostic probe for combustion environments. The work performed in our laboratory is placed in the context of previous work by the authors and other researchers. As discussed in some detail, this technique appears well suited for thermometry in pressurized sooting flames. It may also be possible to perform simultaneous pressure measurements as well. Species detection has been demonstrated at elevated pressures and in atmospheric pressure flames. Our current work involves the scrutiny of the practical details of making and analyzing these measurements as well as expanding the operational envelope to lean combustion conditions.
