Abstract
The generation of discrete solitons, breathers and power-controlled beam steering in a novel voltage-controlled array of weakly-coupled waveguides in nematic liquid crystals (NLC) was investigated. A planar NLC waveguide with uniaxial 5CB sandwiched between treated pulses which provided molecular anchoring in the direction of light propagation was used. An array of finger electrodes applied a bias V across the cell thickness, inducing a spatially-periodic electric-field distribution into the NLC waveguide. The results show that the slight difference in propagation constants gives rise to discrete breathers.
