This paper presents an investigation of the effects on soot formation and oxidation when adding di-n-butyl ether (DBE) to toluene flames. Experiments were performed on a Jet in Hot Coflow (JHC) burner, where a prevaporised toluene and DBE mixture, carried by nitrogen at varying volumetric ratios, are injected into a 1544-K vitiated coflow with 7.5% oxygen by volume. Four flames with different DBE to toluene ratios at constant Reynolds number of 10,000 and coflow conditions are investigated in this study. Centreline temperature using a thermocouple and planar soot volume fraction using laser-induced incandescence (LII) are reported and analysed. It is found that the addition of DBE significantly affected soot inception, growth, and oxidation. The mean soot volume fraction and total soot loading values decrease nearly linearly with DBE addition while the maximum peak soot volume fraction values reduction trend is second order polynomial.
