Abstract

Valuable vicinal 1,2-diols can be prepared with high enantioselectivity by the asymmetric ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogenation of aryl- and alkyl-substituted -hydroxy ketones (see scheme). The ligands, which are distinguished by their modular construction, display excellent enantioface differentiation.
