    Abstract

We report electro-absorption spectra for three thiophene derived conjugated polymers, namely poly (2,5-thienylene vinylene) [PTV], poly(3-hexyl thiophene) [P3HT] and poly(3-dodecyl thiophene) [P3DT]. The induced absorption changes which scale quadratically with applied field are peaked in the vicinity of the π-π* absorption edge with Δαmax ≈ 130 cm-1 at 100 kV/cm for PTV and of order 10 to 15 times less at comparable fields for both P3HT and P3DT. © 1991.
