Abstract
The twenty-first century has introduced great challenges with two of the most significant being the ubiquitous deterioration of environment’s quality and the resource consumption pattern of mankind. As the global pollutions are dominantly due to the emissions or discharge from industrial activities, efforts in tackling environmental problems are therefore logically focused on the reduction of emission at its origin. Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the key pillars in supporting the chemical industries and it is expected to continue to be the central branch of knowledge in propelling the transition toward carbon-neutral processes. Besides different types of renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaics and wind energy, hydrogen has been regarded a promising clean energy carrier as it has the highest energy density on mass basis. Biomass conversion or biomass upgrading is another emerging application for heterogeneous catalysis. Biomass has been regarded as the only substantial source of renewable carbon.
