Abstract

Buildings play a vital role in the well-being and quality of life of communities, as people spend a significant amount of their time inside them. However, the increasing frequency and severity of disasters have exposed the limitations of conventional design approaches, necessitating a paradigm shift toward a resilience-based design approach. In this context, various aspects of building resilience come into focus, including structural resilience, thermal resilience, flood resilience, and more. This chapter specifically aims to enhance the readers’ understanding of buildings seismic resilience. To provide a comprehensive perspective, the chapter deconstructs buildings into three main systems: the structural system, interior building supporting systems, and external supporting systems. These interconnected systems collectively contribute to the overall performance and resilience of the building. The chapter introduces a suggested representation of structural resilience, which enables the quantification of a building’s resilience and facilitates the comparison of different development options. In addition to seismic resilience considerations, the chapter highlights the importance of incorporating green building rating systems that promote sustainable and resilient practices. By leveraging the concepts presented designers and practitioners can enhance the overall resilience of buildings and create more sustainable built environments. Additionally, the chapter offers references to resilience-oriented sources for those seeking a deeper exploration of the topic.
