Abstract

We report on the determination of the anisotropical complex optical constants of highly stretch-oriented poly(p-phenylene-vinylene) (PPV) from Kramers-Kronig transformation of near-normal incidence absolute reflectivity and inversion of reflectance and transmittance measurements. These data are discussed and compared with those obtained from quantum chemical calculations extended to include the electronic correlation in an 11-ring PPV oligomer. On the basis of this comparison a new assignment of the optical transitions in PPV is proposed.
