Abstract

Significant engineering judgment is required to ascertain the scour susceptibility of bridges. This judgment is typically acquired through many years of experience. This paper describes the development of an expert system that encodes the expertise of knowledgeable individuals in hydraulic, geomorphic, structural and geotechnical engineering and bridge maintenance to aid bridge inspectors in evaluating scour potential and stream stability.
