We thank Concepción Rodrı́guez Esteban for her help during the work, Lorraine Hooks for the help in preparing the manuscript, Inés Alves for taking care of the cell culture and Javier Francisco Morcillo for his suggestions. The QT6 Shh-expressing cell line was a generous gift of Delphine Duprez. This work was supported by a postdoctoral fellowship to R.D.T. from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (ref. PRAXIS XXI/SFRH/BPD/1510/2000) and grants from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (ref. 36192/99) and by The G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Charitable Foundation (J.C.I.B and Y.K.). J.R.L. was supported by a fellowship from the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.

N2 - Vascular endothelial growth factor D (VEGF-D) is a member of the VEGF/PDGF superfamily that has been implicated in angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. We have isolated a chick cDNA that shows homology with VEGF-D (also known as FIGF, c-fos-induced growth factor) of other species. Here, we describe the expression pattern of cVegf-D in chick embryos. In the limb buds, cVegf-D shows a dynamic expression pattern that is restricted to the mesenchyme of the posterior region. cVegf-D expression is also detected in the ectoderm and mesenchyme of the head region, somites, notochord and pharyngeal arches. We also report on the capability of Sonic hedgehog and retinoic acid to regulate cVegf-D expression.
