Refractive-index changes and channel waveguides induced by femtosecond irradiation in Ti3+-doped sapphire were analyzed. It was observed that doping the sapphire crystal reduced the threshold for creating structural changes, which enabled the writing of waveguide structures. It was found that the waveguides were formed in those regions of the doped sapphire sample that were adjacent to the upper and lower tips of the regions damaged by femtosecond irradiation. It was also observed that the damage induced in the sapphire created an amorphous or polycrystalline region in the irradiated area resulting in a decrease of the refractive index.
