N2 - The pure- and mixed-gas permeation properties of poly(alkyl acetylenes) were compared with those of poly(4-methyl-2-pentyne) and other highly permeable, branched polyacetylenes. Gas permeabilities of a systematic series of disubstituted poly(alkyl acetylenes) with carbon numbers of 6, poly(2-hexyne), to 11, poly(2-undecyne), were determined for N2, O2, CH4, H2, CO2, C2H6, C3H8, and n-C4H10. Unlike low-free-volume glassy polymers, these poly(alkyl acetylenes) had higher permeabilities to C2+ hydrocarbons than to methane. However, poly(alkyl acetylenes) have lower permeabilities than branched, disubstituted polyacetylenes, such as poly(4-methyl-2-pentyne). Polyacetylene-based polymers have been studied extensively in the last decade for the separation of gases and vapors.
