Abstract

850 nm oxide vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with barrier reduction layers is fabricated for application as light source transmitter in Gigabit Ethernet. By utilizing barrier reduction layers, low-threshold current operation is achieved at high modulation bandwidth. Modeling of this kind of VCSEL for Gigabit Ethernet transmitter is performed using the electrical and optical characteristics measured from the fabricated VCSEL. Data rates of 1.25 Gbps with bit error rate 10'11 is demonstrated using specific optical communication software for multimode operation.
