Abstract

The sequence alignment problem is a generalization of the edit distance problem (see Levenshtein [4]), which measures the difference between two sequences by the minimum number of removals, insertions, and substitutions of symbols required to obtain one sequence from the another. The solution to the sequence alignment problem helps to identify biological similarities in long sequences of DNA, RNA, and proteins.
