Acknowledgements: We would like to thank all the authors who submitted their valuable contributions to this SI. These contributions address key challenges for the design and analysis of RISs for application to wireless communications and networks. We would like to thank the reviewers who provided thorough and timely reviews, hence contributing to the success of this SI. Special thanks go to Christopher Rose, IEEE JSAC Senior Editor, for supporting this SI and for providing many suggestions to shape it. This SI would have not been possible without his advice and encouragement. Special thanks go to Raouf Boutaba, IEEE JSAC Editorin-Chief, for allowing us to coordinate as Guest Editors this SI, and to Janine Bruttin, IEEE JSAC Executive Editor, for her support in the preparation of this SI and the continuous assistance in the various phases of the SI review, paper acceptance, and final publication.

N2 - Future wireless networks will be as pervasive as the air we breathe, not only connecting us but embracing us through a web of systems that support personal and societal well-being. That is, the ubiquity, speed and low latency of such networks will allow currently disparate devices and services to become a distributed intelligent communications, sensing, and computing platform.
