Abstract

This paper describes research efforts to identify the flow constraints that impede departure operations at major airports. It is concluded that the runway system is the key constraint and source of delay and therefore, strategies for improving the performance of the departure operations are most beneficial if they target the runway system inefficiencies. In addition, the paper reports efforts to identify the dynamics of departure operations in some major airports. As a result, it is possible to determine the control points in the system, where the departure sequence at a runway can be affected and improved. Simplified models for different airport systems are presented based on this identification analysis.
