N2 - A 0.537 litre single-cylinder diesel engine with a compression ratio of 15.9 is run on a 91 RON gasoline. At 1200 rpm, at low loads (∼4 bar IMEP) when smoke is negligible, both NOx and the maximum pressure rise rate are lower for gasoline compared to a typical European diesel fuel. At 2000 rpm, and 3000 rpm, with 2 bar absolute intake pressure and at ∼ 10 bar IMEP, the engine can be run with sufficient EGR to get very low NOx but with negligible smoke (FSN >0.1) on gasoline while this is not possible with diesel fuel.
