Abstract

The rhizosphere contained a greater proportion of plant-feeding nematodes and a smaller proportion of Rhabditis spp. than the surrounding bulk soil. Increasing the soil bulk density from 1.0-1.3 Mg m-3 significantly increased rhizosphere nematode populations but not those of the bulk soil. Nematodes tended to be associated with older regions of the root. The microbial-feeding nematodes supplied a small proportion of the plant's N requirement. The nematode community had a net deleterious effect on barley growth. -from Authors
