Abstract

Ways of selective functionalization of otherwise inert poly(isobutylene-co-p-methylstyrene) are presented. The copolymers of poly(IB-PMS) are prepared by carbocationic copolymerization of IB and PMS at various ratios to give a saturate copolymer backbone chain with randomly distributed pendants PMS unit. The advantages and disadvantages of several basic approaches for selective functionalization are discussed.
