Abstract

In this paper the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical model over complex terrain on a High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster is discussed. Simulations were performed with two different nested domain configurations and the patterns and variability of near-surface winds over two selected areas of the Greek territory were compared with data from surface meteorological stations. Various verification statistics were utilized to gauge the ability of the model for accurate predictions and its performance for the different configurations was assessed. Finally, suggestions were made concerning performance optimization for high resolution simulations.
