Abstract
A new classification of geometric continuity is presented. It is based on the simultaneous application of the concept of 'contact of order r" to curves (or surfaces) and to their tangent surfaces and generalized tangent surfaces; this implies projective invariance. The developments are illustrated by algorithms for geometrically continuous Bézier curves. Moreover, we obtain new properties of certain splines derived by variational formulations.
