Abstract
This presentation covers the characteristics of knock behavior of different fuels in spark-ignited engines and how to define the anti-knock quality of practical fuels. A program using a modified CFR engine to investigate toluene/heptane mixtures under new RON conditions and the development of toluene number index are discussed, along with the physics of droplet-induced pre-ignition. A novel experiment that allows the measurement of laminar burning velocity through stratifications of equivelence ratio or fuel reactivity, which has applications to dual fuel strategies where diesel is injected onto a very lean mixture of gasoline/air, is described.
