Abstract

Seagrasses are angiosperms restricted to marine life. They encompass a limited set of closely related species which have successfully colonized the coastal areas across the coastal ocean from intertidal areas to depths in excess of 50. m in the clearest waters, except for polar seas, from which they are absent. This article provides a comprehensive view of seagrass diversity by examining the origin and current distribution of seagrasses, the controls on seagrass species and genetic diversity and their functions in the ecosystem, and threats to the sustainability of seagrass biodiversity.
