title = "Settlement of footings on granular materials: Low and large strain parameters",
abstract = "Many methods have been proposed to predict the settlement of shallow foundations on granular soils. The analysis of more than 200 case histories shows that there is no correlation between penetration testing and back-calculated soil deformation moduli, and the settlements are most often overpredicted for large footings (more than 3 m in width), and underpredicted in the case of small footings. Experimental data found in the literature are used to tabulate the effect of soil and in situ parameters on low and large strain soil moduli and in situ tests. The combined use of penetration testing and wave propagation is concluded from this analysis, and experimentally tested. Buried plates were included for the evaluation of mid-strain deformation modulus. It is shown that the correlation of deformation modulus with cone resistance is dependent on relative settlement, and that the best correlation is obtained by normalizing measurements with respect to G-max, determined with shear waves polarized in the vertical plane. The experimental study includes the testing of model footings.",
