Structure and field-emission properties of sub-micrometer-sized Tungsten-whisker arrays fabricated by vapor deposition

Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate the structure and field-emission properties of sub-micrometer-sized tungsten-whisker arrays fabricated by vapor deposition. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the synthesized whiskers had an average diameter of 180 nm and a length of up to 20 μm. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses of the whiskers revealed that they consisted of pure elemental tungsten. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was also employed to understand the detailed structural characteristics of the whiskers. TEM images confirmed that they had faceted tips and uniform lateral dimensions along the axial direction. High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and corresponding selected-area diffraction (SAED) analyses also revealed that the tungsten whiskers were single crystalline with a bcc structure and grew along the (111) directions.
