Abstract
The study on regioregular poly(3-hexylselenophene) (P3HS) was conducted, which showed P3HS to be a promising electron-donating polymer for photovoltaics. P3HS shows a tendency to crystallize, particularly upon annealing, like a poly(3-hexythiophene) (P3HT). The comparable HOMO levels leads to a similar Voc for P3HS:PCBM (phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) to that found for P3HT:PCBM devices, but the smaller optical gap of P3HS leads to a more pronounced absorption in the red for P3HS:PCBM. A P3HS:PCBM device with an optimized film thickness and composition, and that was annealed at an optimized temperature at 150°C produced a PCE of 2.7%, close to that of P3HT:PCBM device measured under the same conditions. There is still space for further optimization, particularly with respect to improving the morphology to enhance the charge separation efficiency, charge transport, and fill factor.
