Abstract

The paper presents a summary of the results from the Wall-Modeled LES Test Suite of the 2024 AIAA High-Fidelity CFD Workshop, which was held January 6-7, 2024. Participants from seven contributing organizations considered two challenging test cases appropriate for wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) applications. The first targeted smooth-body turbulent separation over a rearward-facing ramp, while the second focused on a high-Reynolds number airfoil at near-stall conditions. Cross comparisons were made between the participants’ results and reference solutions attained via wall-resolved simulations, either from previous computations in the literature or from a workshop contributor. Relatively close agreement was found among many of the participants for quantities such as time-mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles and surface distributions of pressure and skin friction, though convincing grid convergence is still lacking in some cases. The refinement of this workshop over its 2022 predecessor and reduced variability between results are signs of hope for building a foundational test-bed for WMLES beyond canonical turbulent channel flow, which is the focus of a newly formed working group.
