Abstract

In this paper, the preparation of resins containing trityl chloride functional groups and the application of these resins to selected organic syntheses are described. Two types of bead polymers were selected as starting materials in the syntheses of the chlorodiphenylpolystyrylmethane resins. One was a highly crosslinked macroreticular styrene-dinvinyl-benzene copolymer, and the other was a swellable styrene-1% divinylbenzene copolymer. While the macroreticular resin does not swell and can be used in almost any solvent, the swellable resin can only be used at peak efficiency after swelling in an organic solvent such as benzene, tetrahydrofuran or a chlorinated hydrocarbon. Experimental procedures used in the investigation are described in detail. They also include spectroscopic analysis by IR techniques.
