Abstract
It is confirmed that modelling is a powerful and effective means of studying the effect on the climate of great changes in the properties of the surface or the atmosphere; this method alone reveals regional differences in the effects of changes in an area of dry land. The advantages of hydrodynamic models of the climate are discussed, and a climatic model constructed at the USSR Academy of Sciences Computing Centre (Vychislitel'nyy tsentr) is described in some detail. Experiments to estimate the consequences of changes in the land-surface over large areas are described. -P.Cooke
